Matthew Albanese’ Strange Worlds

Matthew Albanese photographs landscapes. The twist is, all his landscapes are of his own creation. That image to the left? Faux fur, cotton, and tile grout. The landscapes encompass everything from vast mountains to icy tundras and utilize everything from paprika to sugar and Jell-O to pull it off. Albanese expounds on his work:

My work involves the construction of small-scale meticulously detailed models using various materials and objects to create emotive landscapes. Every aspect from the construction to the lighting of the final model is painstakingly pre-planned using methods which force the viewers perspective when photographed from a specific angle. Using a mixture of photographic techniques such as scale, depth of field, white balance and lighting I am able to drastically alter the appearance of my materials.

Be sure to check out the rest of his work, really impressive stuff.

Linzie Hunter: Spam One-Liners

It’s no secret that I love the work of Linzie Hunter. Although, since I have neglected to mention that on the blog before, perhaps it is a secret. It is up to you to decide, loyal reader.

Anyhow, Linzie’s Spam One-Liners project is just crafty enough to be on the likes of The Little Things We Do, but just designy and hilarious enough for the world of Straw Dog. Linzie is crazy awesome @ illustrative work and hand-lettering. She put that skill to good use with the Spam One-Liners project by taking snappy/outlandish sayings from the spam we all see in our mailboxes and turning each one into a separate work. Everything from “Welcome to the world of the slim people” to “One Day the Tooth Fairy May Save Your Child’s Life.” Be sure to check out the whole collection, and if you really love it buy the book (which contains 30 one-liners as individual postcards).

Friday Awesomeness: Fallingwater

Green Homes

Super annoyed that Discovery apparently refuses to allow embedding of their videos both from their site, and from their YouTube page. Get with the times guys.

So, we’re going to take a step back in time a couple years, and I’m simply going to provide you a link to this awesome video of an awesome space-saving, transforming apartment designed by Gary Chang. Using tracks, wheels, and other great design elements, he is able to get 24 different room combinations out of his 360 sq. foot apartment.

While you’re checking it out, also view some of the other clips. It’s pretty interesting to see some of the innovative design ideas (ground up vinyl records in flooring!) people come up with while building green homes.

Burly Business Cards

How’s THIS for some “business card inspiration?”

Hit the jump for another design by the same creator, as well as instructions for how to create business cards that double as a flashlight and even dial your phone number. Read the rest of this entry »

Friday Awesomeness: Mind-blowing CGI

Only one piece for Friday Awesomeness this week. This video from Alex Roman is apparently 100% CGI. A little odd in that the video is about photographic compositions of architectural spaces. Why not just go shoot this using real locations? I guess that was you couldn’t show off awesome CGI work, but it all works out in the end. Eat your heart out, Avatar.

Boarding Pass Redesign

You know those boarding passes you get at the airport that look like they’ve printed from an early 80s printer? Tyler Thompson (CD at Squarespace) decided he’d do something about it. While the first couple tries were ultimately hindered by the restrictions of boarding pass printing (i.e. thermal printers), there is some interesting food for thought within his post on the matter.

Pop-Up Lunch

Pop-Up Lunch is a movement/blog started by Alexandra Pulver as an attempt to transform non-traditional public spaces (mainly sidewalks) into places to eat lunch. This is mainly done through portable or permanent “mobile eating tools.” Pretty great ideas abound on the blog, including the Pop-Up Lunchbox, a food-carrying receptacle that can transform into a plate at lunchtime. Alexandra has a lot of other awesome ideas (magnetic coffee cup holder anyone?) that are totally worth checking out.

HOT: Tablets and the Return of Print

I could care less about Sports Illustrated, but this is so unbelievably hot. I am excited to see where this goes. (Do yourself a favor and watch the video @ full res.)

Firefight 2.0

firefightThe Amatoya is a concept ATV from designer Liam Ferguson aimed at helping fight fires. While apparently most existing firefighting scout vehicles are modded Toyota Landcruisers that pack 130 gallons, this Amatoya can apparently rock 475 gallons (and a 105 gallon water tank). I wonder how long it will be before those Super Soakers are replaced with a couple guns that shoot bullets.
