$5 Solar Oven Wins Big
Pretty darn cool: backyard inventor Jon Bohmer spends $5 building a cardboard solar cooker and wins $75,000 from Forum for the Future, which he plans to use manufacturing these from his Kenyan-based business. Although why is this oven maybe not cool? Hit the jump.
Although awesome, solar cookers are anything but new. The executive director seems to take a jab at Bohmer in his quote on CNN:
“We are pleased that Mr. Bohmer has taken up the cause and interest of the 95 member organizations and 160 individuals of the Solar Cookers Worldwide Network,” Widner said. “It would be a pleasure to work with Mr. Bohmer in Kenya where we have been promoting the use of solar cookers for ten years.”
I also find it funny that it’s being praised for all the good it will do (and it will do good), but in today’s climate I bet if everyone had been using these ovens already and someone invented a wood-burning fire it would be praised for using a renewable energy resource and cutting back on the acrylic manufacturing. All about perspective I guess.
Still, if this can actually get manufactured and into the hands of people that need it, I believe it can do a lot of good.
