Late Night Goes…Tech?
Word on the street (via canada.com) is that when Jimmy Fallon takes over the reins of Late Night tonight, tech releases may be an integral part of the show–specifically gaming. Fallon has always struck me as a bit of a tech nerd between vlogging his journey to Late Night, actively Twittering etc. It seems as if Fallon has a vested interest in this and wants it to be part of the show rather than this simply being a ploy by NBC to attract a new audience. Let’s hope that’s right. Gaming looks to be to play a large role in this, with game releases getting similar coverage to movie premiers. I think this is a cool idea, but I wonder how many original/awesome games we’ll be seeing, as videogaming has evolved into more of an entertainment pillar than a niche hobby. What does Fallon have to say about all this? Just what games to I predict we’ll end up seeing? Hit the jump for more.
Fallon justifies his decision in light of gaming’s place with today’s generation:
“We’re going to treat a videogame premiere as if it was a movie premiere,” Fallon promised. “My generation grew up with the computer. We grew up with the Internet. We live in a videogame type of world — videogames are second nature to us. Games make more money, as an industry, than the film industry.”
If I had to take a stab at where this will end up–regardless of intentions–I think we could perhaps see some “big names” like Miyamoto or CliffyB show up…but the main meat of it is probably going to come from one source. What source might that be? Vivendi. As you might be aware, Vivendi has a little subsidiary known as NBC Universal (Late Night) and another little subsidiary known as Activision Blizzard.
That really makes me wonder if we’ll end up seeing a flood of promotions for Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, Spyro, World of Warcraft, etc. Keep an eye out for those, I’m sure they’ll pop up. I hope gaming coverage on Late Night will be more robust than this, but I have a feeling Vivendi will definitely dip it’s hands into this one for a little cross-promotional goodness every now-and-then.
And if you’re Jimmy Fallon…and you happen to be reading this…and you need some sort of witty videogame correspondant: you now know how to reach me.
