Pixar’s Up is launching on May 29th and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I’ve seen the trailer, seen it again in 3D. Normally I find myself stoked for Pixar movies, but for some reason I can’t seem to get excited for Up… Read the rest of this entry »
Environmental Graffiti has a list up of the 35 greatest works of reverse graffiti. For those unfamiliar with the concept: it’s essentially the “wash me” you see on cars, but done by people with artistic skill who don’t think they’re being hilarious (or maybe they do…who knows). TFW2005 is not only out of date (2005? Comon…) but also has a look at the toys (and thus, the robots) from the upcoming Tranformers 2. Although..I kinda see a problem with one of them…
Check out this awesome work from illustrator Joey Ellis. He apparently designed out an entire monster alphabet to help teach his child. I suppose that’s all well and good…until the kid grows up and screams every time he opens a book. Anyhow, check out the full collection for a closer look at the entire alphabet and individual letters.
deviantART is weird to me. It’s this odd amalgamation of people who are really talented, and a bunch of others who spend their time drawing anthropomorphosized animals and anime characters. But, once in a while, you can stumble upon something truly awesome. Take, for example, some of Orioto’s amazing videogame wallpapers. Read the rest of this entry »
Interesting post up at io9 about Mav Lab, a project from designer John Bielenberg. Sounds a bit conceptual at this point, but it’s an awesome idea. It’s somewhat humorous that designers can often see the potential of design working good around the world, and people outside the design community often are incredulous that such a thing could even happen. I haven’t had much time to read up on Bielenberg’s project, but the rough description sounds a bit like TED:
Bielenberg’s Project M is an interdisciplinary design program created to help design impact communities, and his new project, the Mav Lab looks to go one step further, by marrying groundbreaking thinkers with producers to try and… well, change the world, or at least the way we think about it.
Did you all see the awesome teaser trailer for this summer’s Transformers 2? Good. Did you see that huge robot Optimus is swinging around on during the trailer? Rumor has it that is but one seventh of the 120 ft. tall Devastator. Do you remember that one? You thought you were hot stuff with your one or two transformers, then some punk showed up with six constructicons that not only transformed, but combined into a much freakin’ larger transformer. GACK. I was getting ready to pre-write up a blog post about Go Spec Yourself Day , only to realize that I was already 3 hours officially past it. Drats. Anyhow, kudos to Bright Black for creating such a day and trying to raise awareness about spec work…but I’m also going to give them a thumbs down for not fully supporting their own holiday. It seems the purpose of the blog post was to have people blog about spec work (and thus link to Bright Black), put art in the Flickr group, follow the GSYD Twitter account, and then tell friends about GSYD (and link back to the original post).
That’s all well and good, but I would have liked to see a bit more information about spec work, why it sucks, as well as some tactics for dealing with it. I’m sure Aaron is an awesome guy, but at the moment GSYD seemed more purposed towards getting hits pointed at Bright Black instead of actually confronting spec work.
I guess that’s it for GSYD. I missed it. :\ I do, however, want to write a post about spec work soon, because every time I see a “logo contest” on Craig’s List, I want to crack some shins.
Did anyone else partake in GSYD? What are your opinions of spec work? DISCUSS!
