Augmented Reality in YOUR Hands

I dig augmented reality. If you’ve got a webcam (works with Mac Books, so there goes your excuse) head over to GE’s new site, print off the special graphic, and then witness the awesomeness. Hit the jump for more augmented reality coolness.Augmented reality is something that really hasn’t taken off. There doesn’t seem to be much use for it, and up until now there hasn’t been much of a platform for it. I would figure that with advent of more advanced cameras and recording devices in cellphones, we’ll probably begin to see a bit more AugReal (I’m copyrighting that) pop up.

I could also see AugReal helping out toy manufacturers who have been losing converts in droves to the new-fangled videogames of today. For example, I could see Hot Wheels or Lego create something along the lines of what’s seen in this video.

Suppose you bought a Lego set where you could build a model island, but then you also had the option of purchasing an XBox 360 game that let you drive cars around your island? It could be done pretty easily, especially with today’s consoles featuring things like the XBox LIVE Vision Camera or the Playstation Eye. In fact, Sony has been one of the early innovators (yes, you read that right) in AugReal games with the release of Eye of Judgement for the PS3.

AugReal is a pretty neat bit of technology and it will be interesting to see where it’s going to pop up yet. It’s already being experimented with at BMW and has been used in a theme park ride in France

But, until then, try it out for yourself at Plug Into the Smart Grid.
