You Don’t Know Black.

Caught a link to The Professional Designer’s Guide to using Black on Twitter a couple days back. Anytime I see the words “professional designer” online, I’ve found they’re usually tacked onto a collection of horrible Photoshop tutorials and I prepare a guffaw that I can let loose upon viewing them.

Moments later my guffaw was nulled, and I realized how much about black there really is to learn. An in-depth look at black from Andrew Kelsall rocked my face in ways unexpected. Part One: The Different Blacks. Part 2: Using Black. Part 3: The Misuse of Black. If there was a Part 4, it would probably involve staring blankly at the screen as your designmind reassembles itself. If someone out there had designed black, and written a style guide for it, this would be it. If you’ve designed, and you’ve ever used black, this is pretty much required reading. If you’ve designed, and somehow haven’t used black, contact me, I want to write a blog post about you.

That was a great article, although I found that image he made (which you posted here) to be kind of hilarious because of the numerous typos I discovered in the article. I am willing to overlook them of course thanks to all the useful information contained therein.

Thanks for the review Josiah. It’s interesting to hear our thoughts on the article.

Evan, If you look at my “AK doesn’t make mistakEs” logo, you can see the ‘E’ turned backwards, implying that I DO makes mistakes, and therefor having a dig at myself in good humour :)

As a point of interest, what typos did you see…I can’t find any (?)
